oh... and I forgot about the hidden messages, slightly different routines, etc... Some games have even been cracked twice by the same group (different intos, e.g. California Games by WOW or Super Cars by Paranoimia) for me there are hundreds of reasons to have them all. Now I agree that they should not be all displayed on the front page..

Actually I was not talking about a global single exe for the selection rather to have one single exe per intro group. Its not so much about space teras are cheap today Its really just about not having to dig in x different packages per intro while you could just have one.

Another advantage of "resources" would be that you could index them in the DB as well and I could search my name in them and see in which intros I was greeted

Just suggestions and from your perspective I fully understand that its much more quicker to release dupes .. Keep up the good work.

@sID: yep, musashi9 had the same idea. But actually it's easier to release dupes. Sometimes it's not just about the text, but also music routines (I do not always use the same) and also the technologies used. For example I use OpenGL, rbz uses DirectX and Shockwave and nzo write their code in FreeBasic while I write it in C. It would be hell on earth if we wanted to have one single exe with a menu for all this...

Tetra is adding a new feature to the portal here so the dupes don't get displayed in the front page.

Regarding the size on the disk (on the server side) well... I've been told so many times that we have room here, that I feel it's about time to fill it in. Then regarding the database, searching through thousands of entries is definitely something that a MySQL server can handle.

always something going in here

I was wondering about all the multiple releases, since it seems that only the text is changing wouldn't it be better to handle this through some kind of resource files and keeo single intro code base where you could just select the "game" type before starting the intro? This would drastically reduce the number of packages, reduce the work and people could particiapte by simply sharing a resource file without having to compile the intro at all.

@Stormbringer

This has indeed been the busiest time for me at work.

Its slackened off a bit now so I have more time on my hands. Stormbringer, i've PM'd you me e-mail address so you can directly e-mail me about such features you've talked about here. I would really like to add some new features to the site as its falling behind with updates and its now long overdue one. Although i'm having to work on other sites currently too, mainly a couple charity sites, I will be able to fit in adding features to here too. I want this site to be in your vision. Being the largest contributor to this site, that make you the most qualified as to what will make the site better for everyone and you to use. I'm simply the conduit that allows you to mould the site to whatever it need to be

Don't be afraid to ask me to do something to the site, the worst I can say is I cant and that rarely happens

I know you think you understand what you
thought I said but I'm not sure you realize
that what you heard is not what I meant.

Instead of having 8 exe files inside the same Zip why not just have 1?

This will be especially good for all of the intros that have identical gfx and music and the only difference is the text. That way you can have a GAME NAME selector(like the screen mode selector) before the intro starts, then just feed the new text into the intro and run it.

Then on the intro page you just adapt your search engine to display only the name of the game people search for. You can even adapt it to display the correct screen shot too

Example: I want to search for Beermon It takes me to the Venture intro page and it displays Beermon V0.37 at the top.
If I search for Wayne Gretzky Hockey 2 it takes me to the same Venture intro page but the adapted search engine will make that page display Wayne Gretzky Hockey 2 at the top and maybe underneath you can display all of the other titles that are inside the same exe (using smaller letters of course)

How could anyone hate you for all your hard work Stormbringer?

Just from my own point of view, I think that everything should be remade, it is the portal that needs to be changed slightly to accomodate the dupes.

This will happen as soon as possible I promise. Just have some patience with me please, Im not feeling well atm and I need to ask Tetra to change the portal and make the necessary changes to the database.

The dupes attack day

About this dupes discussion, I simply can't see any problem with this, the search engine is capable to display all latest productions as Stormbringer said.

In fact I think it's so hard to remake those duplicates, you need find it, debug, copy new text, check if everything is correct, compile, make screenshot, update a info file, zip it, upload... pfff ...

Stormbringer really deserves a gold medal for all that work

ok... now everybody hates me

I finished with all the dupes of the Venture intro. I only have another Venture cracktro that needs to be remade (different from the ones just uploaded)

Thanks for getting being patient with me

I also finished uploading the dupes for 2 Ackerlight intros. If you know about more cracks that used these two intros (the one on Lombard Rally and the one on Purple Saturn Day, let me know)

I prefer the B method. My reasons are:

1) if you have all versions of an intro in a single zip archive, then you ruin the purpose of the Search tool: you can't search by production name or musician anymore.

2) In my eyes, the collection here shall have ALL the versions of the intros released, whatever they are (original ones or dupes). Some of them are well remembered, some not, some "never seen". Again if you put a single zip archive for several intros, lots of interest is lost.

3) If you look at how members here search for intros, you will notice that they often search by the name of the game they remember the intro was on. Again a single zip file will not make this possible. Again I feel that if I search for a game called "Ninja" something, I should get all the intros/trainer menus/demos related to these words.

4) some prods have been recycled by several groups. I also think it's important to expose what the scene was back then as accurately as possible.

These were for me the main reasons that made me stop to upload remakes on www.intro-inferno.com. I can't see why we should have 20 times a XOR texture with bad colors in 256 bytes and not intros that a whole generation remembers.

Ideally I'd like to have the ability to have intro families. So when I mass update with similar intros, only one entry is shown in the "Last 5" list.

The answer to this will be to ;

A: Put dupes (intros with exact same music and gfx) into the same zip.

Or:

B: Have an extra upload field saying;

Dupe:

[ ] Yes
[ ] No

Whis means that if the dupe button is checked, they will be excluded from the latest 5 list but still appear in the not downloaded list.

I prefer the second option, it's more elegant.

I haven't had a chance to chat about this with Tetra yet, I have swine flu and he's a chef so this is his busiest time of year.

It is on the agenda though and it will be sorted out.

it's actually my fault since I started to mass update the site again (by releasing dupes also). I know Shockwave did not like the idea, but I exposed my reasons. For now people have to rely on the list of prods they did not download, or come more often

Also using the Search tool with no production name selected will display all the prods in the "last entry first" order. You can then see what the last additions are

I'm sure a solution will be found.

Ideally I'd like to have the ability to have intro families. So when I mass update with similar intros, only one entry is shown in the "Last 5" list.

Comments are welcome!
